The Central European Labour Studies Institute (CELSI) based in Bratislava, Slovakia, fosters multidisciplinary research about labour markets and institutions, work, employment and organizations, and ethnicity and migration in the economic, social, and political life of modern societies. We are involved in a number of international research projects in industrial relations, working conditions, work-related migration, inequality, and analysis of labour market data. For the tasks within our international research projects, we are looking for

JUNIOR RESEARCHER (20-30 hrs/week, negotiable)

with experience in qualitative research and potential for engagement in quantitative research.

Your duties

  • contribute to CELSI’s activities by carrying out research in our ongoing research projects. The projects preferably focus on the following topics: industrial relations, role of trade unions and employers’ associations in society and for policy making, collective bargaining in Central and Eastern European countries, changes to working conditions, impact of digitalization on work and similar.
  • contribute to CELSI’s data analysis tasks by working on quantitative assignments under supervision of our data manager
  • participate in project meetings, conferences and workshops and are ready to present your work to an international audience
  • contribute to writing research reports, policy briefs, blogs and academic publications including journal papers under supervision of senior researchers
  • communicate with CELSI’s international network of researchers
  • organize seminars and other project events

Qualifications

  • a master’s degree or equivalent in the social sciences (e.g., sociology, political science, economics, law, political economy) or humanities
  • previous research and/or professional experience in working on labour market research topics
  • demonstrated methodological background for qualitative research (e.g., interviews, survey analysis, text analysis, discourse analysis)
  • able to communicate fluently in English (speaking & writing, including academic writing) as this is the working language of the program.
  • a demonstrated record of policy engagement is an asset
  • computer literacy: MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint in particular. Previous experience with statistical software STATA, SPSS, R, E-Views is an asset
  • interest in labour market issues and project-based research in the field of labour and labour markets
  • strong analytical skills and willingness to learn
  • reliability, flexibility, creativity
  • motivation to work in a dynamically growing research institute
  • motivation to interact with researchers worldwide

What we offer

We are a progressive, highly motivated team of researchers and data analysts. We offer a stimulating research environment with excellent contacts in our international research networks. We support future PhD endeavors especially in the field that matches our research interests. The place of employment is Bratislava, Slovakia. The initial employment contract will be for one year. An extension is intended but conditional on project funding. Number of weekly hours worked is negotiable, the originally part-time position may be extended to a full-time position from 2019 upon new project funding. Starting date is negotiable, preferably December 1, 2018, but no later than January 1, 2019.

Offered salary

  • 1300 EUR/monthly/gross for a full-time employment contract, plus benefits according to research performance
