Inequality of opportunity makes a voter angry
Hugo del Valle-Inclán Cruces is a PhD candidate from the University of Vigo (Spain), currently visiting CELSI under the InGRID program.
The political scenario of many developed countries has undergone major changes in recent years, as center-left/center-right parties lost political ground while extremists gained it. This international phenomenon, dubbed as “the politics of rage” (Barth, 2016), poses threats as severe as the citizenship’s declining trust in democracy and rising support for authoritarian alternatives (Foa and Mounk, 2016). We propose a new methodological strategy to measure inequality of opportunity that allows us to estimate it for more years than what is currently possible, to then study its relationship with the mentioned political changes.
The effect of employment protection legislation on self-employment: a comparative analysis between immigrants and natives
Magdalena Ulceluse was recently awarded a doctoral degree in Political Science at the Doctoral School of Political Science, Public Policy, and International Relations, Central European University.
The paper by Magdalena Ulceluse and Martin Kahanec (full abstract in attachment) investigates the effect of employment protection legislation on self-employment rates, in a comparative analysis between immigrants and natives, using OECD indicators on the strictness of employment protection legislation (EPL), self-employment rates calculated for natives and immigrants from the EU Labor Force Survey, and a range of control variables, in a longitudinal study covering 18 European countries over the period 1995-2013.
