A new open-access article co-authored by CELSI researchers Monika Martišková, Patrik Gažo and Tibor Meszmann has been published in the European Journal of Industrial Relations, the principal English-language forum for analysis of key developments in European industrial relations.
The article examines how the twin transition — automation and digitalisation on one hand, and the shift to electromobility on the other — is reshaping the automotive supplier industry across Germany and Central, Eastern and South-Eastern Europe.
Drawing on surveys of employee representatives conducted in 2016 and 2024, the findings point to a concerning pattern: while German plants show signs of erosion in their lead roles, no corresponding upgrade is taking place in CEE.
National differences in labour strategies persist, with Germany maintaining high-skill approaches while CEE continues to rely predominantly on semi- and low-skilled labour.
The article is authored by Martin Krzywdzinski (WZB Berlin Social Science Center, Weizenbaum Institute & Helmut Schmidt University Hamburg), Monika Martišková (CELSI & Charles University in Prague), Patrik Gažo (Institute for Sociology, Slovak Academy of Sciences & CELSI), Ștefan Guga (Syndex Romania & Central European University), Tibor Meszmann (CELSI) and Katarzyna Rakowska (Centre of Migration Research, University of Warsaw).
