A new demographic report from the European Commission places four Slovak regions — Žilina, Banská Bystrica, Prešov, and Košice — among the EU areas at highest risk of talent drain.
Brussels is responding with a new strategy called the Right to Stay, which will determine the resources and tools available to the most affected regions. The topic is covered in a new article by Lucia Lauková for euBrief.
The article also draws on statements by CELSI Scientific Director Martin Kahanec, who describes demography as a question that directly determines competitiveness, prosperity, and democracy.
He points to the so-called doom loop — a weaker regional economy drives outmigration of young people, which accelerates ageing and depopulation, reduces demand for skilled labour, and makes both business and public services harder to sustain.
Regional decline is not inevitable, however. Kahanec presents a regional restart as an alternative — a combination of a good business environment, decent jobs, affordable housing, quality schools, and strong local services.
