Does the proposed reform of the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) have a real chance of accelerating the decarbonisation of European industry, and under what conditions?

This is the question at the centre of a TASR news, in which CELSI researcher and Institute of Sociology, Slovak Academy of Sciences researcher Patrik Gažo shared his views.

Gažo sees the conditioning of free allowances on green investments as a sensible step. At the same time, he warns that public support for decarbonisation must be tied not only to green investments, but also to social guarantees. Without them, technological modernisation may proceed — but its social costs will be passed on to residents and workers, fuelling further social, economic, and political instability.

Patrik Gažo researches the decarbonisation of Slovak industry also within the EcoMobility Transition project, supported by EUKI - European Climate Initiative, led by CELSI in cooperation with the European Trade Union Institute (ETUI), NELA - Next Economy Lab, and Instytut Spraw Publicznych. The project examines fair and sustainable transition in Central and Eastern European regions where the automotive industry plays a key role.
