As the ESET Science Award 2026 closed its nominations, the award portal looked back at last year's laureate in the category of Outstanding Scientist in Slovakia Martin Kahanec.
An article accompanied by a short introductory video presents his research, the institutions he has built, and the lasting impact of his work on European science and public policy.
Kahanec - co-founder and Scientific Director of the Central European Labour Studies Institute (CELSI), professor of economics at Central European University in Vienna and the University of Economics in Bratislava - is one of Europe's leading experts on labour markets, migration, and social inequalities.
The article highlights his conviction that migration and mobility are not a threat but an opportunity, when well-designed, they strengthen both society and the economy.
Particular attention is given to the living wage methodology developed by Kahanec and his team in cooperation with the WageIndicator Foundation, now used in 175 countries worldwide and serving as a reference tool for the European Commission, the United Nations, and employers and social partners across the globe.
