For the first time in its modern history, Slovakia is facing a long-term decline in its working-age population.

Vision Slovakia 2040 was prepared by more than 350 experts under the auspices of the Slovak Academy of Sciences. It notes that the domestic workforce will not even cover the people retiring, while labour productivity stands at about two-thirds of the EU average.

On Tuesday, 10 November, from 10:00 to 11:15, the panel will discuss which of the vision's recommendations are feasible and who will pay for them. It will also compare Slovak solutions with what other EU countries are trying.

Topics include productivity after the era of cheap labour, interrupted careers and retraining, bringing more people and older workers into employment, and migration and brain drain.

The debate is organised by the civic association Europolicy together with Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung and euBrief.sk, at the European Information Centre in Bratislava (Palisády 29).

Speakers:

  • Monika Uhlerová, President of the Confederation of Trade Unions of the Slovak Republic
  • Miroslav Štefánik, Director of the Institute of Economic Research of the Slovak Academy of Sciences
  • Monika Martišková, CELSI senior researcher and Deputy Director
  • Representative of the European Labour Authority (TBA)

The debate will be moderated by Radovan Geist, publisher of euBrief.sk.
