Collective bargaining is becoming one of the main ways workers shape how AI is used at work.

Our new study on how trade unions in European services address AI and algorithmic management through collective agreements was officially published by FES Future of Work on 15 October.

It maps collective agreement provisions on AI across Europe and identifies practices that support worker involvement, data protection and transparent algorithmic governance.

The study was first presented on 12 October at the webinar "AI, Algorithmic Management and Collective Bargaining in European Services: Fast Track or Slow Lane?".

The webinar was organised by FES Future of Work and UNI Europa, in cooperation with CELSI and the WageIndicator Foundation.

Knut Dethlefsen, Director of FES Future of Work, and Oliver Röthig, Regional Secretary of UNI Europa, opened the webinar.

CELSI Managing Director Marta Kahancová and Fiona Dragstra, General Director of the WageIndicator Foundation, then presented the findings.

In the panel that followed, Federica Cochi (President, APIQA-CGIL) and Bjørn Tore Sund (Deputy Chair, NITO) responded to the findings and shared their unions' experience in addressing AI at work, before taking questions from participants.

The lively discussion confirmed how much interest there is in the topic. AI and algorithmic management are only now moving to the centre of many workplaces and bargaining agendas, and we look forward to continuing our research in this area.

The study's authors are Marta Kahancová, Daryn Zholdasbay and Tomáš Šarközi (CELSI), together with Fiona Dragstra, Gabriele Medas and Intan Citra Phonskaningtyas.

Many thanks to FES Future of Work and UNI Europa for organising the webinar, to the panellists, and to everyone who joined.
