What makes people stay in a region, return to it, or invest in its future? The future of regions begins with trust

This question was the core of the discussion series ”Hľadá sa Gemer”, which concluded on 27 June 2026 in Betliar with its fifth and final public discussion.
Between February and June, the series explored the future of the Gemer region through events in Rožňava, Revúca and Betliar, while also engaging with local schools and students.
Throughout the discussions, CELSI Scientific Director Prof. Martin Kahanec, a labour economist and Rožňava native, highlighted that regional development depends on much more than jobs and investment. Strong institutions, quality of life, community ties, and above all trust are equally important.
As Martin Kahanec concluded after the series: "The future of regions begins with trust." When people believe their efforts matter, they are more likely to stay, return, invest, and help shape the place they call home.
Thank you to GemArt, Juraj Genčanský, Karin Kilíková, Martina Štěpán, KC Kláštor, the Municipal Cultural Centre in Revúca, and everyone who contributed to this inspiring series of discussions.
