Jelle Visser (1946) is emeritus professor of sociology at the University of Amsterdam, where he co-founded and directed from 2000 to 2010 the Amsterdam Institute for Advanced Labour Studies (AIAS), an interdisciplinary centre for research and graduate teaching. He is a leading expert on trade unions and trade union statistics, and one of Europe’s foremost scholars on employment relations. Jelle Visser has held research and teaching positions and fellowships at the European University Institute in Florence, the University of Mannheim, the University of Madison-Wisconsin, Stanford University, Nuffield College Oxford, Bocconi University and the University of Milan. He was from 1996 to 2000 associated with the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Societies in Cologne, Germany.
