Since 2017 she has focused on transnational labour sourcing agencies and action research in the area of migrant workers' rights. Olena also has an interest in research methodologies informed by the feminist insight. Next to publications on qualitative methods in migration studies, she has developed expertise in visual methods and documentary filmmaking.

Since 2012 Olena directed 2 documentary films: "Road of a migrant" (2015) looking at the role of the church in migrants' lives and "Olha's Italian Diary" (2020) speaking of the taboos in personal stories of solo female migrants. Her current documentary film "Funeralzzi" (in-production) deals with the topic of transportation of the bodies of those labour migrants who passed away in migration.
