David Ost is the Joseph DiGangi Professor of Political Science at Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, New York, and frequent visiting professor in eastern Europe, particularly Poland. He is an internationally known scholar in the fields of east European labor, political economy, and democratization. His books include Solidarity and the Politics of Anti-Politics (1990), Workers After Workers' States (2001), and The Defeat of Solidarity: Anger and Politics in Postcommunist Society (2005), which won the Ed Hewett award for the Best Book in Political Economy and which, after its translation into Polish, continues to figure prominently in contemporary Polish political debates. Ost has published in a variety of scholarly and popular journals, such as Politics and Society, European Journal of Social Theory, Theory and Society, East European Politics and Societies, European Journal of Industrial Relations, The Nation, Dissent, Telos, Tikkun, and elsewhere. He is currently on the editorial boards of Politics and Society, East European Politics and Societies, Polish Sociological Review, Studie Socjologiczne, and is a founding member of the Warsaw Forum of Economic Sociology. His edited collection, “Class After Communism,” is forthcoming in 2015 as a special issue of East European Politics and Societies.
