Martin Kahanec speaks about labor mobility at the ETUI, Brussels

On January 31, 2013, Martin Kahanec spoke at the conference "European labour markets in (the) crisis: Is there light at the end of the tunnel?" organized by the European Trade Union Institute (ETUI) in Brussels.
Drawing on his recent research projects, Kahanec reviewed what we know about "Labor mobility in an enlarged European Union". He argued that mobility in an enlarged European Union provides for increased efficiency of European labor markets in spite of the problem of migrants' downgrading into low-skilled occupations. He further refuted the myth that migrants abuse welfare provisions, or are attracted by counties' welfare generosity. He concluded that free mobility in the EU provides for efficiency gains that should be supported by improved mobility, integration and welfare policies.
