Central Europe Between Capitalism and Climate Change: Book Launch & Discussion
Published on Feb. 10, 2026

How does Central Europe navigate the tensions between capitalism, climate change, and sustainability, while remaining positioned on Europe’s semi-periphery?
On February 26, 2026, a public discussion accompanying the book “Stuck in the Semi-Periphery? Central Europe Between Capitalism and Climate Change”, will be organised by Proforum and Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Slovakia.
It will explore how historical development paths, economic models, and environmental constraints intersect in the region today.
📘 The discussion, featuring CELSI researcher Monika Martišková, will reflect on Central Europe’s trajectory from industrialisation to EU integration, the contradictions between economic growth and ecological limits, and the broader question of whether and at what cost a transition toward sustainability is possible.
Speakers:
- Richard Filčák – Head of the Institute for Forecasting, Slovak Academy of Sciences
- Brigita Schmögnerová – President, Proforum
- Richard Stáhel – Director, Institute of Philosophy, Slovak Academy of Sciences
- Monika Martišková – Central European Labour Studies Institute (CELSI)
