Co-founder and Scientific Director of CELSI Martin Kahanec chaired the Class A2: Social and Related Sciences sessions at the Academia Europaea Annual Meeting 2025, held last week in Barcelona and hosted by the Academia Europaea Barcelona Knowledge Hub.

🌍 The Class Plenary “Democracy, Prosperity, and Sociality within Planetary Boundaries” — featuring Guy Midgley, Nebojsa Nakicenovic, Hartmut Rosa, and Isabelle Anguelovski — addressed how living well within ecological limits requires not only technological innovation but also social trust, just institutions, cultural grounding, and inclusive governance.

🔎 The Class Meeting “Rethinking Social Science in an Age of Rupture” — with Rob van Tulder, Jonathan White, Chris Hann, and Antje Wiener — discussed how social sciences can move beyond diagnosing crises to actively contribute to democratic resilience, sustainable prosperity, and new global orders.

☕ The World Café sessions offered space for open academic exchange, while a joint A1–A2 session chaired by Genoveva Martí and Björn Wittrock focused on the 5th EU Freedom/Letta Report, with contributions from former EU Commissioner Janez Potočnik.

🤖 A special lecture by Philippe Aghion, Nobel Laureate in Economics 2025 and a distinguished member of the Section Economics, Business and Management Studies, explored whether we should fear artificial intelligence.

The meeting brought together leading academics from across Europe to reflect on how social sciences can contribute to addressing the challenges of our time.
