Sexual harassment and mental health at work under the spotlight in Uppsala
Published on June 17, 2025
On June 5, Marta Kahancová (CELSI and Comenius University Bratislava) participated in the ENLIGHT Open Symposium on Mental Health at the Workplace hosted by Uppsala University, as part of the POHODA project – Promoting Mental Health in the Workplace.
In her presentation, she discussed the role of trade unions in addressing psychosocial risks, drawing on CELSI's recent international project on sexual harassment in the workplace, implemented with Friedrich Ebert Stiftung and SSSH Croatia.
Tackling sexual harassment has been conceptualised within the broader framework of mental health at the workplace. Beyond presenting the findings on the incidence of harassment, identified needs of victims and institutional support across 6 countries, the key question raised in her presentation was the expected role of trade unions in mitigating harassment and thereby contributing to improved mental health.
The event was opened by Erik Olsson from Uppsala University, followed by presentations of several leading voices in the field:
- Gosia Kozusznik (Ghent University) on the psychological and physiological impacts of workplace stress
- Niclas Almén (Uppsala University) on recovery processes at work
- Lisa Elena (Comenius University) on building psychologically safe workplaces
The event was organised within the ENLIGHT European university research alliance, which includes University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU), Universität Bern, Université de Bordeaux, Comenius University Bratislava, University of Galway, Universiteit Gent, Georg-August-Universität Göttingen, University of Groningen, University of Tartu, and Uppsala University.
