Martin Kahanec in Denník N's Expert Panel on the 2027 state budget proposal: A gamble with Slovakia's future

CELSI Scientific Director and professor of economics Martin Kahanec assessed the consequences of the 2027 public budget proposal for Denník N.
Parliament is debating the 2027 public budget proposal, which projects a deficit of nearly 5 percent of GDP and continued growth of public debt. Denník N assembled a panel of leading economists to assess the consequences of a budget with this structure.
CELSI Scientific Director and professor of economics Martin Kahanec described the proposal as a gamble with Slovakia's future.
He warns that despite previous consolidation measures, the deficit is not falling but growing - and that the budget postpones problems rather than solving them, shifting costs onto future generations.
He finds it particularly concerning that the proposal likely does not comply with the constitutional law on budgetary responsibility.
In Kahanec's view, fiscal sustainability is a matter of public interest that transcends politics: "Fiscal sustainability has no party colours. It is in all of our interests, regardless of political conviction. A country that loses control of its finances gradually loses the freedom to decide its own future."
The panel also featured contributions from Radovan Ďurana (INESS), Ivan Mikloš (former Finance Minister), Brigita Schmögnerová (former Finance Minister), Michal Mešťan (Faculty of Economics, Matej Bel University), Renáta Bláhová (BMB Partners TAXAND), and Vladimír Baláž (Slovak Academy of Sciences).
