CELSI Managing Director Marta Kahancová and researcher Adam Šumichrast commented for euBrief news portal on a new platform work law in the Slovak parliament.

A new platform work law is heading to the Slovak parliament. Slovakia is on track to become one of the first EU member states to transpose the European directive on platform work, and according to CELSI researcher Adam Šumichrast, it is a regional "pioneer" in this process. The law theoretically offers couriers an employment contract with paid leave and sick pay. According to the article, however, most of them work only a few hours a week and have little interest in changing their contractual status, since flexibility being what matters most to them.

CELSI Managing Director Marta Kahancová stresses that the goal should not be to eliminate flexibility, but to prevent it from being used as a cover for shifting all risks from the platform onto the worker.

Adam Šumichrast adds that the key question remains whether platform workers will actually want to claim employee status at all.

The article also examines protection against algorithmic management, the role of fleet companies as intermediaries, the right to organise in trade unions and its limits, as well as a comparison of Slovakia's approach to transposition within the broader European context.

CELSI researches platform work through several projects, including EGRUiEN and the newest Horizon project Wunderwork.
