Is Slovakia really falling behind, or are perceptions more pessimistic than reality?

In a recent interview, CELSI Scientific Director Martin Kahanec reflects on the gap between public sentiment and economic evidence, arguing that expectations and narratives play a powerful role in shaping the country’s trajectory.

The interview was published on 26 April 2026 in the Slovak conservative daily Postoj and conducted by journalist Kristína Votrubová.

Martin Kahanec, an economist specialising in labour markets and migration, emphasises that Slovakia’s long-term development has been more positive than often perceived.

He highlights improvements in employment, wages, and economic convergence with the EU, while warning against what he describes as a “spiral of pessimism” that can undermine motivation and policy ambition.

Drawing on both data and personal experience, Kahanec also discusses the conditions under which Slovaks living abroad may consider returning.

He argues that beyond financial incentives, improving quality of life, public services, and long-term vision is key to attracting talent back to the country.

The interview further explores regional disparities, demographic challenges, and the role of migration.

Kahanec stresses that well-managed migration can be an asset for the economy and labour market, while also underlining the need for better integration policies.
