The Responsibility of Knowledge: Martin Kahanec in discussion at ESET Science Award and Klub pod lampou event

On 21 April 2026, CELSI Scientific Director Martin Kahanec took part in a public discussion entitled "The Responsibility of Knowledge", organised by .týždeň, ESET Science Award, and Klub pod lampou in Bratislava.

Does scientific knowledge come with responsibilities? And who bears them?

On 21 April 2026, CELSI Scientific Director Prof. Martin Kahanec took part in a public discussion entitled "Zodpovednosť poznania" (The Responsibility of Knowledge), organised by .týždeň, ESET Science Award, and Klub pod lampou in Bratislava.

The event opened the 2026 edition of the ESET Science Award, whose theme this year reflects a growing concern in scientific and public debate: that knowledge is not value-neutral, and that with the growing power of scientific discovery and technological possibility comes an increasing responsibility for how findings are used and what impact they have on society.

Kahanec joined fellow ESET Science Award laureate Daniela Vacek (Filozofický ústav SAV, Kempelenov inštitút inteligentných technológií) on the panel, alongside Erik Láštic (Filozofická fakulta UK v Bratislave) and Paulína Bohmerová (Nadácia ESET). The discussion was moderated by Juraj Petrovič.

As a laureate in the category Outstanding Personality of Science, Kahanec contributed to the debate from the perspective of a labour economist whose work spans migration, inequality, and the social consequences of economic transitions — fields where the link between knowledge and its societal impact is direct and consequential.
