Rising transport costs and social impacts: Patrik Gažo featured in euBrief

In a recent article by euBrief, CELSI researcher Patrik Gažo highlights the risks of poorly coordinated policies, warning that mobility may become more expensive faster than viable alternatives are developed.

As Slovakia prepares for the introduction of ETS 2, concerns are growing about its social impacts, especially for households in regions already facing limited transport options.

In a recent article by euBrief, CELSI researcher Patrik Gažo highlights the risks of poorly coordinated policies, warning that mobility may become more expensive faster than viable alternatives are developed.

For many low-income households, particularly in rural and automotive regions, access to a car is not a luxury but a necessity to stay in employment.

The discussion brings together a range of expert perspectives on transport poverty, infrastructure gaps and policy design.

Contributors include also Marek Engeľ (Institute of Environmental Policy, Ministry of Environment of the Slovak Republic), Rebeka Hengalová (EUROPEUM), Dan Kollár (Cyklokoalícia), Tomáš Chabada (Institute 2050), and Patrik Gažo (CELSI; Institute for Sociology, Slovak Academy of Sciences).

The article highlights a growing consensus that without timely policy action and better coordination across sectors, the green transition risks deepening regional inequalities rather than reducing them.

Patrik’s contributions draw on insights from multiple research activities, including the EcoMobility Transition project.

EcoMobility Transition is a joint initiative of the European Trade Union Institute (ETUI), the Central European Labour Studies Institute (CELSI), NELA. Next Economy Lab, and Instytut Spraw Publicznych, implemented under the EUKI – European Climate Initiative of the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Climate Action, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMUKN).
