In an interview for TREND, conducted by journalist Juraj Skačan, CELSI Scientific Director and professor of economics Martin Kahanec explains why migration should be seen as part of the solution – not the problem.
As Slovakia faces demographic decline and persistent labour shortages, the role of foreign workers is becoming increasingly central to the country’s economic future.
In an interview for TREND, conducted by journalist Juraj Skačan, CELSI Scientific Director and professor of economics Martin Kahanec explains why migration should be seen as part of the solution – not the problem.
He highlights that Slovakia’s relatively low share of foreign workers signals untapped potential, particularly in sectors facing acute labour shortages.
While migration cannot replace education or regional development policies, it plays a crucial complementary role in sustaining economic growth, production, and competitiveness.
Kahanec also stresses that the impacts of migration depend heavily on policy design. Effective integration – including language support, recognition of qualifications, and fair working conditions – is key to maximising benefits for both migrants and the domestic workforce.
Addressing common concerns, he notes that migrants typically complement rather than displace local workers, especially in growing sectors. When properly managed, migration can support productivity, innovation, and investment, while helping firms remain competitive.
At the same time, he warns that without a strategic and well-coordinated approach, countries risk social tensions, segmentation of labour markets, or underutilisation of skills.
