A new book chapter authored by CELSI researchers Tibor T. Meszmann and Olena Fedyuk has been published in the edited volume Migration and Social Reproduction: Critical Junctions between Labour, Border and Reproductive Struggles (Edward Elgar, 2025).
The book edited by Gabriella Alberti (Leeds University Business School), Lisa Riedner (Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich), and Gwyneth Lonergan (Northumbria University), brings together critical perspectives on how migration, labour markets, border regimes, and welfare systems shape social reproduction in times of overlapping economic and social crises.
The chapter, titled “Home as a service: social reproduction, reindustrialization, and the return of worker dormitories in Hungary”, examines the renewed role of worker dormitories in Hungary’s reindustrialisation since 2010.
Drawing on a case study from a former mining town, the authors show how dormitories structure migrant workers’ everyday lives, labour market experiences, and social reproduction under conditions of high labour and capital mobility, while also contributing to insecurity and feelings of disposability.
