What word best captures the year 2025 in Slovakia? In a survey by the daily SME, which gathered responses from dozens of public figures, the most frequently mentioned terms included slayáda, consolidation, polarisation, but also resilience and hope.
Among the respondents was CELSI Scientific Director and professor of economics Martin Kahanec, who pointed to deeper tensions that continued to intensify throughout 2025 – between the country’s economic needs and political solutions, between public spending and revenues, and between growing global threats and the state’s capacity to respond to them.
In his reflection, he stressed that Slovakia finds itself at a crossroads. “The country still has solid foundations, and in recent decades it has shown that when we reach a crossroads, we are able to mobilise. The first step is to realise that no one will do it for us – each of us is part of the solution in a shared effort to find a path towards a prosperous and just society for all,” Kahanec emphasised.
