The recent ESET Science Award 2025 laureate in the main category Outstanding Scientist in Slovakia, Martin Kahanec, was the guest of Slovak Radio’s long-standing talk show “Nočná pyramída”, where he shared his personal story and reflections on the role of science, education, and research in shaping a better society.
In the almost hour-and-a-half conversation, Kahanec talked about his academic journey from Rožňava to leading European universities and his work as Scientific Director of the Central European Labour Studies Institute (CELSI). He discussed topics such as migration economics, wages and living standards in Slovakia, and the importance of evidence-based policymaking.
The discussion also touched on the concept of the Living Wage, developed by CELSI and the WageIndicator Foundation, and how this research helps define what a fair and decent income means for Slovak households today.
Throughout the conversation, Martin Kahanec emphasized how curiosity, perseverance, and critical thinking are essential for both science and society — values that remain at the heart of CELSI’s mission.
