DEEPLAB: Implications of deep decarbonization of the high emission industries on labour market and employees

The future of jobs in Slovakia’s automotive sector under decarbonisation

April 1, 2026

What will the transition to zero-emission mobility mean for jobs in Slovakia’s key industrial sector?

At our final webinar of the DEEPLAB research seminar series, held on 31 March 2026, we presented new findings on the future of employment in the Slovak automotive industry in the context of decarbonisation.

The event featured CELSI researchers Monika Martišková, Jakub Barszcz and Paulína Bobčeková, who introduced four scenarios of automotive decarbonisation and their implications for:

  • labour demand
  • the skills structure of the workforce
  • the future of jobs up to 2050

The results were also commented on by researcher Michal Hrubý (CzechInvest and Škoda Auto University) in relation to European policies aimed at supporting the automotive sector.

The discussion highlighted the importance of understanding how ongoing and upcoming EU-level policies will shape industrial transformation in Central Europe and what this means for workers.

As emphasised by Monika Martišková in her closing remarks, there is a clear need to broaden the debate on policy measures that directly affect workers, and to better understand how these changes will translate into real impacts on employment, skills, and working conditions.

📊 This webinar marked the final presentation of the model results. The research team will continue refining the outputs and preparing further analysis.

📅 A final conference is planned for June, where we will return to these questions and discuss policy implications in greater depth.

🙏 Thank you to all participants for your active engagement and insightful contributions throughout the discussion.

📌 The DEEPLAB project focuses on the economic consequences of decarbonisation and its labour market impacts, particularly in hard-to-abate sectors and their value chains in Slovakia. It is supported by the European Union – NextGenerationEU through the Recovery and Resilience Plan of the Slovak Republic.
